Marketplace listing photos: how to choose the lead photo
On most marketplaces the first photo on a listing is the one shoppers see in search results and category pages, so it is their first impression of the item. Many listings already have a stronger photo further down the gallery. Find those listings and move the stronger photo first: it needs no new photo shoot.
What makes a strong lead photo
Five things decide whether a photo works as the first one a shopper sees. They are the five the free audit scores:
- Lighting: exposure, contrast and white balance
- Sharpness: focus and blur
- Framing: whether the whole item is in frame and level
- Clutter: how busy the background is
- Clarity: whether the item is easy to see (scored only when Topit could read all the photos it checked on the listing)
Check the platform's own rules first
Every marketplace sets a floor. eBay requires at least one photo that is 500 pixels on its longest side, and does not allow added borders, added text or watermarks.[1] Airbnb tells hosts to take horizontal photos, because search results crop images into squares.[2]
If you run the marketplace, write your own rules down the same way, so sellers and your catalog team check against the same list.
Find the listings that already have a better photo
Most catalogs do not need new photos everywhere. A listing whose third photo is sharper, brighter and better framed than its first is fixed by changing the order. Reshoot only the listings where no photo is strong. Finding those listings is what the free audit below is for.
Then measure, do not guess
A photo that scores better on craft is not certain to get more clicks from your shoppers. To know, show the new lead photo to part of your traffic and compare it with a control group that keeps the current order. Topit's 30-day trial does this, choosing the lead photo for each shopper.
Get a free audit of your listing photos
Topit's free listing photo audit scores up to 12 photos on each listing and shows which listings lead with a weaker photo than one they already have, with the reason for each pick. Free, with no account and no script.
Questions
Do I need a photo shoot to fix weak lead photos?
Not always. Many listings already have a stronger photo further down the gallery, and moving it first costs nothing. Reshoot the listings where no photo is strong.
How many listings does the free audit cover?
The instant audit takes one to five listing URLs, up to 40 photos in all, and usually emails the report in minutes. For more listings, the request form on the same page asks Topit to run a larger audit.
Does the audit change my listings?
No. It reads only the public listing pages you name, one page at a time, and emails you a report. Nothing on your site changes.
